Some thoughts on why I'm in the Space Corps:

When I was a kid, I thought the Space Corps was for Crunchies.
I'm not really sure what I meant by "crunchies", it's just the word we used.
I asked Birmingham if he knew the etymology, he knows a lot about old earth and he's my friend so he won't make fun of me for using words without knowing what they mean.
He told me it had something to do with Granola.
I still don't understand.
Regardless, when I was a kid, I thought the Space Corps was for a particular kind of person, and I thought I was not that kind of person. I thought I was a "Man of Action"
It turns out I was just a victim of a propeganda machine. I was convinced that I was Special, and that no one else was special. (We're all special, that's the trick.)
I was wrong about the kind of person the space corps is for. It's for anyone.
I was wrong about the kind of person I was.
All I got out of service to the Solar Federation was the conviction that the Solar Federation has outlived it's usefulness.
Everything I thought I'd find through service to the Solar Federation, I've found here in the Space Corps actually helping people.
Also mice, apparently. Didn't think I'd find those. Didn't even know what they were.
And yes, okay, the people I work with are some of the weirdest people I can imagine.
But we've done more good for more people in the three days we've been docked with this Generation Ship waiting on a transport than I did in a year in the Solar Guard.
There's no comparison.
And yes, okay, I'm a cynic. I run my mouth and try to keep an air of ... I dunno ... detachment?
It's mostly an act. I love the work that I do. I love the people that I work with. I care about this stuff.
But I hate waiting, and for the last three days (in spite of all the good we've done!) there has been an Awful lot of waiting.
I feel like I'm going to Burst if I can't find something to do.
Heck, I've started Looking for the Mouse that can't possibly exist, because I can't think of anything else to do with my time.
Birmingham has some kind of special HoloSim planned. Hopefully that'll keep my mind occupied until Something Happens.
